Starting in Balen, ‘cycling through the trees’ is an experience that will enrich every cyclist. Via the Keiheuvel recreation area a ride takes you right to our Limburg neighbours of Lommel, Hechtel-Eksel and Leopoldsburg.
Not only Limburg is nearby, also the border with the Netherlands is within cycling distance. A trip to the idyllic Postel is highly recommended. Near the Dutch border, the Norbertines built their abbey here in the twelfth century. The abbey church is one of the few witnesses of Romanesque architecture in our region. By bike, you will be amazed by the vastness of the forests and lakes that you will discover along the way. In nearby Mol, large lakes have formed as a result of white sand quarrying. The best known is the Zilvermeer (Silver Lake) that offers numerous recreational possibilities. Certainly a suggestion if you are travelling with children.
Would you like to absorb some more culture? Then the Jakob Smits Museum is certainly worth a visit. Although Smits’ work can also be found in the large museums in Flanders, the majority of his oeuvre is exhibited in Mol. The small-scale museum in the old vicarage of the village of Sluis has not yet been invaded by the masses, which makes a visit extra charming.
